Music Fan
The Music Industry is changing because of the internet, and everyone is trying to figure out how it works. In the meantime, I’m almost overwhelmed by the amount of places I can go post stuff about our band, which begs the question, do we even need a website anymore? We’re on myspace and facebook, cbc radio 3 and reverbnation, so what would anyone find here that they can’t find there? Anyway, here’s the finished website, it’s finally done. We’ll probably blog only infrequently, as it takes some whipping to get my bandmates on twitter etc. but I’m not here to complain.
We’re all scratching our heads wondering why we should even bother with a cd anymore (I wanted to do vinyl, which would have showcased the lovely cover art by Carrie Walker, but sadly we’re not rolling in dough), and trying to get used to the idea that music is freely available everywhere, like water, as David Bowie said. I hesitated for a second putting our whole album online – its not even out yet! – but we’re trying to be heard on a global level now, instead of just local, and do I think we are going to make millions from album sales? I think not. What I would really love above all, is if people just listened to the damn thing.
I have to admit this whole being in a band in the age of the internet is pretty fun, though, which is probably something that most people (ie the music industry) don’t think about when they’re wringing their hands. It’s pretty fun to post your gig on facebook and actually get a sense of whether there’s going to be anyone there or not. Plus, as a mom, its hard to go out and find new bands when the kids are going to wake you up hellishly early the next morning, so thank god for YouTube. I’m pretty excited by the music in and around Vancouver (my current favorite local acts: We Found A Lovebird, Buffalo Swans and Winston )and mostly they were found on the internet. I can only hope other bands will find us too.
While those who make a lot of money from music are in a full fledged panic, for the rest of us little people, its a darn good time to be a music fan.
